Plus, when The Dude is writing that check in the grocery store at the beginning and George Bush is on TV, doesn't anybody else think it's weird that the date he writes on the check is September 11th? Rudy in MT (10 out of 10 ) I knew how universal the appreciation was for this movie while sitting in a campground in Glacier National park with two young Dutch Guys and we were taking turns quoting from it. Best characters and writing ever lads! The dude abides.
Raven (10 out of 10 ) The are only a few movies that could be rated that could be good enough to be in line with this film. In fourth place would be "Uncle Buck" for its clever whit. In third place would be "Dumb and Dumber" for its pure comicness, second place would be "Happy Feet" for its message on being different is good and in first place would be this film for its ability to make you cry with laughter each time you watch it. Some films are funny the first few times but "The Big Lebowski" could be watched 700 times and nothing would get old.
ZZ (10 out of 10 ) I realized that this was my favorite script and movie when me and the other "dude" who sits on my row of cubicles started quoting it ad nauseum. No one wants to sit near us now. Anyway, I work as a reader in Hollywood and it's so refreshing to see the dialogue written EXACTLY the way it is performed. Every little exclamatory utterance that Goodman and Bridges say on-screen is written down for them. Absolutely genius. The more I watch the movie, I realize how absolutely inane the whole thing is and how the story just kind of ends without any sort of finality. In my life I have been lucky enough to have a phone conversation with the real "Dude," and I am going to try to turn my birthday into a Lebowski-fest where I take part in the BIG LEBOWSKI CHALLENGE: Every time he drinks a white russian, every time he smokes one of his roaches DO AS THE DUDE DOES. "Say what you want about the tenets of national socialism, at least it's an ethos".
Marakai (10 out of 10 ) Sometimes there's a film. Well.. it's the film for its time and place. Aaw, heck! I've done introduced it enough. Top class, endlessly quotable film which is just as much of a joy to read as it is to view. The dude has to be one of the best screen characters ever. Matched by several other wacky and wonderful characters as only the Coen bros know how. A must read!
A.Laszlo (10 out of 10 ) Coen Bros are unique aways & originals with each new movie. They'd already done more & better than many other good movie makers did in all their lives. Coen's movies are predictable:you are going to see something totally new & you have no idea what will happen next.
M.Davenport (5 out of 10 ) While there's no arguing that the movie is brilliant, this script version of the script SUCKS! I glanced through it and found multiple errors; words missing, words added, ect. Maybe this is the script as it came from the writer but it doesn't reflect what is said in the movie, which is what I was looking for.
Vnrao (3 out of 10 ) I love this movie. It's one of those movies that seems to get better every time you see it. There is nothing like a Coen Brothers movie, their stories always seem to exist in a universe very much like the one we live in but just a little stranger. When I write I want my characters to sound like the characters in Lebowski, Fargo, Raising Arizona, etc but they don't.
Magnus (10 out of 10 ) The Big Lebowski is definitely one of my top 10 movies. The Coen Brothers have the exact same sense of humor as me. John Goodman's character, Walter Sobchak, is one of my favorite characters and this is my favorite line: "HAS THE WHOLE WORLD GONE CRAZY? AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THE RULES?".
HarryV (10 out of 10 ) My friend and I have always argued about a specific bit of dialogue. When the Dude is telling Walter about the beeper and how he can be reached at one point Walter says:" Life does not stop and start at your convenience, you miserable piece of shit." Now do you guys think that was directed to Donny for asking a question or in reference to the other Jeffrey Lebowski, the millionaire, for possibly interrupting a bowling game to schedule the handoff? Who was meant for that comment?
Pokey Man (10 out of 10 ) I'm paraphrasing the words of several prominent reviewers: In an ideal world all fims would be made by the Coens. Bridges is a master of the art of shambling. So suited to the role of "Dude" it's hard to imagine him as anyone else. One has the feeling that those "smarty pants Coens", like the Dude will also abide.
Pokey Man (10 out of 10 ) I also should add that John Turturro is astonishingly funny in his performance as a perverted Latino bowler. Every time I revisted those scenes or even think about them I start snickering again.
Dude (10 out of 10 ) This script has some discrepancies between it and the actual movie - which I assure you is not a problem.
